Collecting Email Addresses from Your Outlook Express .EML Files

There is gold in your old email messages.  Former customers, people you used to keep in contact with at your previous job, prospective buyers you didn’t close, all of these email addresses  are locked in EML message files that you may have stored on your computer.  Microsoft Outlook Express or Windows Mail will save your  individual email message into an RFC-822 compatible file that often has the .eml file extension.  These messages contain all of the sender, receiver, date information as well as file attachments.

Often aging .eml files go neglected and unappreciated for their usefulness and the legal authority they convey.  We in no way condone sending spam messages.  Yet, consider that the people who sent these emails to you have an prior existing relationship to you. This means you can contact them without the specter of the U.S. “Can-Spam” act falling on your shoulders. These are your contacts, which you can legally email.

The email addresses of your contacts are locked inside of the .eml files, but you could open each one individually, copy the email address to a spreadsheet, close the .eml file, and then go on to the next one. This would involve a lot of effort and be tedious,  to stay the least.  What you need is software that will let you search and convert a directory of .eml files into an organized Excel spreadsheet or .csv file.

There are very few software packages that can do this job (convert .eml emails into .csv files) effectively.  One package that we looked at was EML Viewer Pro.   This software is both a viewer and exporter of .eml files. It can read .eml files, and then export the contents directly into a .csv (comma separated values) file which can then be opened by Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice Calc.  Although the file will contain other values from the email, if you only require the email addresses, just delete the other columns.  A few simple Excel commands will remove duplicate emails.

To use EML Viewer Pro, you would simply select the directory where your .eml files reside. EML Viewer Pro will read those emails in and display them in a list.  To select all emails, type “control-a.”  Now select “Export to .CSV” from the dropdown list and then click the “Export” button to begin. EML Viewer Pro will go to work extracting information from your .eml fies and then organizing it in a CSV text file.  It can export a single email, or it can export thousands in a single batch.

The end result is an email list which you can legally contact for your purposes such as getting a job, refreshing old relationships, sending an update newsletter or any other legal reason.

EML Viewer Pro is shareware so you can download it and try it free for fifteen days.  This free trial is followed by an unconditional 30 day money back guarantee. If you don’t like it, just return it for a full refund.  The trial version is only limited in one way: exports are limited to 50 emails in a single operation.  If you only have a few hundred emails to process, then you can easily accomplish this during your free trial. If you have tens of thousands of emails to export, fifty should give your a good sense of whether EML Viewer Pro will work well for you.  Try EML Viewer Pro today!
